Virgin Valley Water District
Evaluation, Selection, and Pilot Testing of Arsenic
Treatment Technologies

The Virgin Valley Water District, located in Southern Nevada, utilizes local groundwater as its sole water source. Unfortunately, all of the District's wells contained arsenic above the newly adopted Federal limit of 10 ppb, with some wells reaching as high as 90 ppb. Through a subcontract with Bowen Collins & Associates, Inc., the District retained the services of WQTS to evaluate alternative treatment technologies for arsenic removal. WQTS staff identified a list of treatment options, analyzed their advantages, disadvantages, and costs, and selected a recommended technology for implementation at the District's wells. WQTS then conducted a six-month pilot-scale evaluation of the selected technology, culminating in the development of the appropriate design criteria for three arsenic removal plants with a combined capacity of 14,000 gpm (20 MGD).
