Serrano Water District, California
Pilot-Scale Testing of Ozone & UV with Chloramine for DBP
Control

The Serrano Water District, located in Orange County, California, operates a 4 MGD surface water treatment plant and blends its treated surface water with chlorinated groundwater. The District complies with the DBP limits under the Stage 1 D/DBP Rule, but will need to make changes at the treatment plant in order to comply with the DBP limits under the Stage 2 D/DBP Rule. In 2008, WQTS completed a pilot testing effort to evaluate replacing free chlorine with either ozone or UV as primary disinfectants, followed by chloramine for secondary disinfection in the distribution system. Pilot testing successfully evaluated pre-chloramine as a bromate control measure, and confirmed that the final treatment train will allow the District to comply with the Stage 2 D/DBP Rule limits. The pilot study concluded that ozone/chloramine is the preferred treatment alternative. WQTS was then retained by the District to help develop a design RFP for adding ozone and implementing chloramine conversion at the plant and the District's groundwater wells.
