Pilot-Scale Testing of Iron Media for Sulfide Removal from
Groundwater

 


 

The City of Santa Barbara owns and operates a number of groundwater wells, including wells that contain elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), iron, and manganese. The City retained the services of Carollo Engineers and WQTS to evaluate a new treatment technology that achieves sufficient removal of sulfide, iron, and manganese, and that can be constructed at the existing site. To determine the effectiveness, reliability, and cost of the new treatment system, WQTS conducted pilot testing at the City's Ortega Groundwater Treatment Plant site over a period of six months. Developed by WQTS, the treatment approach included two-stage filtration: first through granular iron media, then followed by filtration through conventional sand/anthracite. The use of granular iron media for sulfide removal is a new approach that, to our knowledge, has not been implemented before for sulfide removal. The advantages of the two-stage filtration approach are that it could be implemented in compact pressure vessels, and it does not require the discharge of hydrogen sulfide into the environment, as other alternative treatment technologies do. Backwash water from the treatment system would be discharged to the City's sewer system, which would then flow to the City's wastewater treatment plant.
