Ultra-light Media for Minimizing Backwash Water in
Coagulation-Filtration Arsenic Treatment Plants

 


 

Many small utilities require treatment for arsenic removal from drinking water wells. The coagulation/filtration (C/F) process is an effective non-proprietary treatment applicable to small systems. However, conventional sand/anthracite media require a high upflow velocity to fluidize the bed and achieve efficient backwashing. The resulting high backwash volumes require onsite handling and disposal, which add to the cost and complexity of the treatment system. WQTS was awarded funding through the Water Research Foundation (formerly the AWWA Research Foundation) to pilot test an ultra-light filter media for the C/F process. The testing indicated that the ultra-light media produced effective arsenic removal similar to that achieved with sand/anthracite (with ferric chloride addition). However, the volume required for effective backwash of the ultra-light media was only 20% of the volume required for backwashing sand/anthracite media.
