Water Research Foundation
Formation of Hydrazine as a Chloramine By-Product

In cooperation with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the University of California Los Angeles, WQTS led a research project funded by the American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AwwaRF) to evaluate the formation of hydrazine as a by-product of the chloramination of water and wastewater. Hydrazine is a cancer-causing chemical with a de minimus cancer risk level estimated at 10 ng/L (ppt). The project included the refinement of a low-level hydrazine analytical method, and quantified the formation of hydrazine under typical conditions of drinking water and wastewater treatment.
