Eight California Water Agencies
Evaluation of NDMA Formation from Water Treatment Polymers

 


 

With financial support from eight California water agencies, and in cooperation with the University of California Los Angeles and the University of California Berkeley, WQTS conducted bench-scale testing to evaluate the impact of water treatment polymers on the formation of nitroso-dimethylamine (NDMA) upon chloramination of drinking water. The study evaluated 12 polymers, and investigated the effect of various operational and water-quality conditions on the formation of NDMA. These included chloramine dose, polymer dose, water pH, and contact time. The study also examined the potential formation of dimethylamine (DMA) as a polymer breakdown product and its impact on subsequent NDMA formation.
