Support of a Dual-Train Water Treatment Pilot Plant

The Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake & Sandy (MWDSLS) owns and operates the Little Cottonwood Water Treatment Plant located in Sandy, UT. WQTS served as the technical manager for the design, fabrication, delivery, and installation of a dual-train pilot plant at the Little Cottonwood WTP. One train included complete conventional coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration, along with a five-chamber ozone contactor that could be operated in the preozonation or intermediate-ozonation mode. The other train included an identical conventional train along with a preoxidation contactor for future evaluation of chlorine dioxide to compare its performance to that of ozone on the other train. Each train was fed from a blending tank in which the District's two water sources were blended at any desired ratio. Since the installation of the pilot plant, WQTS has continued to provide technical assistance to MWDSLS staff for the planning, implementation, and interpretation of various pilot tests aimed at providing operational data for the full-scale treatment plant.
