Planning and Implementation of Chloramine Conversion

The City of Burlingame, CA, receives water from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). In 2003, SFPUC converted its distribution system disinfectant from free chlorine to chloramine. Through a subcontract with Erler & Kalinowski, Inc. (EKI), WQTS provided technical assistance to the City of Burlingame to help them prepare for converting their system and reservoirs to chloramine. Data collection and full-scale testing were conducted to help minimize the impact of chloramine conversion on the City's drinking water quality. Special attention was given to the City's storage tanks to help minimize the occurrence of nitrification after conversion. WQTS staff also provided training to City staff focusing on the chemistry of chloramine and the operation of a chloraminated distribution system.
